Sending it and the receipt

What the post office gives you back, and why it matters.

Key words

Read these first: you will meet most of them in the document.

  • la ricevutathe receipt / proof of application

Conservi la ricevuta: è la prova che ha fatto la domanda.

Feminine. More formal than lo scontrino: the slip that proves a payment or an application. When renewing a residence permit, the post office ricevuta is what shows you are in order while you wait.

  • spedireto send / post

Devo spedire questa lettera in Inghilterra.

Takes -isc-: spedisco, spedisci. Used for letters and parcels; for a message or an email Italians say mandare or inviare.

  • la praticathe case / file (paperwork)

La mia pratica è ancora in lavorazione.

Feminine. In an office it is your file or application, not practice in the English sense; in pratica means basically. Sbrigare una pratica is to get some paperwork done.

  • la convocazionethe summons / appointment letter

Nella convocazione c'è la data dell'appuntamento in questura.

Feminine, from convocare. A formal call to appear somewhere on a set day — firmer than un appuntamento, which you arrange yourself.

  • l'appuntamentothe appointment / date

Ho un appuntamento dal medico alle tre.

Masculine. A medical or business appointment, and also a romantic date. Prendere un appuntamento is to make one.

  • la scadenzathe deadline / expiry date

    Attenzione alla scadenza del contratto.

Feminine, from scadere, to expire. La data di scadenza is the expiry date on food and documents; un documento scaduto has expired.
