The interview and the trial shift

Talk about your experience, your availability and the trial day.

Key words

Read these before you listen: you will hear most of them.

  • il colloquiothe interview

Domani ho un colloquio di lavoro.

Masculine. Un colloquio di lavoro is a job interview, and a colloquio with a teacher is a parents' meeting. Un'intervista is a journalist's interview.

  • il cameriere / la camerierathe waiter / the waitress

Cerchiamo un cameriere per il fine settimana.

Plural i camerieri, le cameriere. Customers call a waiter with scusi! or mi scusi! — never cameriere! out loud, which sounds rude.

  • l'esperienzathe experience

    È stata un'esperienza indimenticabile.

Feminine, and countable in a way English resists: ho fatto un'esperienza — Italians do an experience rather than have one.

  • disponibileavailable / willing

Sono disponibile anche il sabato e la domenica.

One form for both genders. In interviews disponibilità means both when you can work and how willing you are to help.

  • il turnothe shift

Questa settimana faccio il turno di sera.

Masculine. Fare il turno di pranzo / di cena; il turno spezzato is a split shift, lunch and dinner with hours off in between.

  • il / la titolarethe owner (of a business)

Per le ferie devi parlare con il titolare.

Same form for both genders. The owner who runs the place; il datore di lavoro is the employer in a contract.

  • la provathe trial (shift)

Venerdì sera faccio una prova in un ristorante.

Feminine. Un giorno di prova is a trial day; il periodo di prova is the probation period written in a contract.
