Italian marked word order: dislocation and cleft sentences

Marked word order: left/right dislocation, cleft sentences and resumptive clitics.

In Italian: Dislocazioni e frasi marcate

Spoken Italian moves what matters to the front and leaves a pronoun behind to hold its place: il pane l'ho comprato io.

Right dislocation does the reverse — the pronoun comes first and the noun is added afterwards, almost as an afterthought: l'ho comprato io, il pane.

A cleft sentence isolates the focus between essere and che: è Marco che ha telefonato, non Luca.

Il pane ___ ho comprato io, non tu.
