Italian imperfect and pluperfect subjunctive: fossi, avessi, avessi fatto

Advanced subjunctive forms for hypothetical and counterfactual statements.

In Italian: Congiuntivo imperfetto e trapassato

The imperfect subjunctive ends in -assi, -essi, -issi: parlassi, scrivessi, dormissi, plus the two you will use most, fossi and avessi. The pluperfect is avessi or fossi followed by the participle: avessi saputo, fossi andato.

They are what an unreal condition needs: se fossi ricco, se avessi saputo, se fossimo partiti prima.

They are also required by the sequence of tenses once the main verb is in the past: credevo che fosse vero, non sapevo che fossero già arrivati.
