Italian reported speech and the backshift of tenses
Tense backshift when reporting what someone said.
In Italian: Discorso indiretto avanzato
When the reporting verb is in the past, the tense inside moves back one step: presente becomes imperfetto, passato prossimo becomes trapassato prossimo, and futuro becomes condizionale passato.
"Vengo domani" becomes ha detto che veniva il giorno dopo; "partirò" becomes ha detto che sarebbe partito.
Words for time and place shift with it: oggi becomes quel giorno, qui becomes lì, domani becomes il giorno dopo.
Ha detto: "Sono stanco". → Ha detto che ___ stanco.
