Italian relative pronouns: che, cui, il quale

Relative pronouns: che, cui, il quale, chi, il cui...

In Italian: Pronomi relativi

che is the workhorse: it covers both subject and direct object and never changes form, whatever the gender or number — il libro che leggo, la ragazza che parla.

After a preposition che is impossible and you need cui: la casa in cui vivo, l'amico di cui ti ho parlato.

il quale is the formal alternative, and it earns its keep when you need to make clear which noun you mean: la sorella di Marco, la quale abita a Roma.

Il libro ___ mi hai prestato è bellissimo.
