Italian conditional sentences: the three types of periodo ipotetico

Hypothetical sentences: reality, future possibility, and unreal present/past.

In Italian: Periodo Ipotetico

The first type is real and simply states a consequence, with the indicative on both sides: se piove, resto a casa.

The second is possible but not the case now: imperfect subjunctive plus present conditional — se avessi tempo, verrei.

The third is finished and cannot be changed: pluperfect subjunctive plus past conditional — se avessi avuto tempo, sarei venuto.

Se piove, io ___ l'ombrello.
