Italian gerund and progressive tenses: stare + -ando / -endo

The gerund (-ando/-endo), progressive forms with stare, and the compound gerundio (avendo/essendo + participle).

In Italian: Gerundio e forme progressive

The gerund ends in -ando for -are verbs and -endo for the other two families: parlando, scrivendo, dormendo.

stare plus the gerund is Italian's only true progressive, and it means right now: sto mangiando. Unlike English it cannot carry a future — tomorrow I'm leaving is domani parto, not sto partendo.

On its own the gerund supplies a reason or a manner: essendo stanco, sono andato a letto; si impara sbagliando.

In questo momento sto ___ i compiti.
