Italian contracted prepositions: nel, sul, dalla, degli
Contracted prepositions like nel, sul, dalla, degli, all' — formed from a preposition + article.
In Italian: Preposizioni articolate
When di, a, da, in or su meet a definite article, the two fuse into a single word: di + il = del, a + la = alla, da + gli = dagli, in + il = nel, su + le = sulle.
The same sound rules as the article apply, so you get dello studente and nell'acqua.
con and per do not contract in modern Italian: con il treno, per la strada.
