Essere and avere: the Italian present tense of to be and to have
Present tense of "to be" and "to have": sono, sei, è... ho, hai, ha...
In Italian: Essere e Avere
Essere (to be) and avere (to have) are the two most common verbs in Italian, and both are irregular, so they are learned as they stand: sono, sei, è, siamo, siete, sono — ho, hai, ha, abbiamo, avete, hanno.
They come first because every compound past tense is built on them later: ho mangiato, sono andato.
Watch the places where Italian uses avere and English uses to be: ho vent'anni (I am twenty), ho fame (I am hungry), ho freddo (I am cold).
